A pioneering minister and civil rights activist whose tenure at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama (1947–1952) directly preceded that of Martin Luther King Jr. His leadership and radical stance against racial injustice played a critical formative role in shaping King’s approach to civil rights activism.
A Historic Moment for Houston.
For the first time in over 30 years, Houston’s two major Martin Luther King Jr. Day parades are coming together—uniting as one to present a powerful message of peace, purpose, and progress.
Together, we are embracing Dr. King’s dream by honoring our shared humanity and standing united

"Embracing the Oneness in Humanity"
As our city leads by example, this theme calls on us all to uplift the values of love, justice, equality, and unity. In a world often divided, this moment reminds us of what’s possible—when we come together.
